Minutes Endurance Trail / Festival of the Templars, 112km, 4376 m elevation

That is over for me, my sports season is over. More comp for two months, just a few short trips when I feel I have fully recovered. Endurance Trail, I had the opportunity to talk about is a race margin of the Festival of the Templars on a size of 120 km and which is held every 5 years.

After my encounter with the incredible Stephanie Couleaud, also known as the Raid EDHEC UltraSteph after this super BMTU made his company, I decided to join him on this long version of the Templars. Indeed, in planning the beginning of my different interests, I was thinking more finish on the 72km, but what do you run a terminal 116 when it is desired to UTMB and its 160km / 9000m D + in 2010, Nor is quite incongruous, especially as it was part of a long drive ...

So now, this Friday, at 4am, I was from this trail in Nant, Aveyron, like 514 other runners (and apparently 700 registered). Released late to work and get my bib before the start of the race, I could barely sleep 2am. It's better than nothing and even though I really could not have done otherwise, a little more sleep before the race would have helped I am sure many on 16km past ... well I will get

At 4 o'clock, so when the start is given to the middle of the village, he pluviote slightly. Not enough to beat an ox. It is even almost enjoyable. It does not really cold. Given my lack of training and my fatigue lately, I choose the strategy of prudence, starting slowly, and the same strategy that I adopted on my first 50 km, since 2 years ago . I think this was good strategy. The first 39 miles go as a letter in the mail in 4:14 minutes. I do not know the exact elevation on this part but I feel good. It is now day, the markup is flawless, really hard to go wrong! For history, I tried for the first time the red light on my forehead. Not bad ... I admit it's more relaxing for the eyes but in raids I always spent on lighting white, much more efficient and therefore suitable for the descent of night!

Still no trace of UltraSteph. Arriving a little hard with my stories bib, we did not could see us before the start of the race .. After the 39th km ravito follows a rise followed immediately by a huge (or should I say huge, endless) serving dish, false flat, slightly downhill, slightly uphill. And it is this section that I meet Steph. What a pleasure to see a known head! Especially as I start to feel tired. Steph is gone faster than me but suffers from back pain that will not leave him alone. Time to talk to him a bit, take a picture. Steph encourages me and I leave on my race.

I arrive at the 57th km Prat Peyrot around 10:30, after 6:30 effort. It's tough. It's cold, the ravito is not covered and I learn that Steph has finally dropped ... Well, no Steph, you will not leave me alone? " Cold, rain, fog and fatigue combined ... it's hard. Of course, I could quit but I do not really think. Only a joint injury, bone or ligament, could make me make that decision. None of my backyard, just tired, that one feels when one is forced to have a cycle of inspiration / expiration complete. No excuse So. UltraSteph which was brought by bus to the 57th ravito encourages me again. Certainly, no other option but to end this Ultra. I think the rest that awaits me at the end of 116km, to all beings who are dear to me and make me move forward in life. 17min after stopping ravito it is time to leave.

The following portion is quite short. This is the climb to Mont Aigoual. I grow relatively land known since I participated in the Trail Mountain Aigoual and dust a year earlier. The rise is predicted to be difficult but is actually quite easy. It continues to run well. Time, however, is execrable. I'll end up believing it is never good on Mount Aigoual. Arriving to the top, I am greeted by violent gusts. Strong enough to deport me to the side and knock me off my path. I am also greeted by a strange discovery ... Breton flag;)

Ironically, this portion of the route that I perceive for the first time the sun is shining above the clouds! At 12:16, running 8:16, I perceive the 70th km. We moved away from the weather, less wind, more rain, the sun heats sometimes and a golf driving ... still ravito Each is an opportunity to relax a little. At this hour of the race, it's hard to know what I want. Tired of eating the same thing. My energy bars nutrition SCIENTEC won on the Trail of the Maritime Alps are not really good (but they have the deserves to be there). My cashew nuts are too fat and pasty, the soup contains ravito surely fish which I am allergic ... and beer placed on tables ravito are very tempting ... but no, too dangerous, not before the arrival

I continue, it's not roll evil. Now we cross the limestone plateau or at least what I identify with the landscape of limestone ... it's beautiful. I can always restart on the flat. With the other riders we spend our time doubling each other ... For my part, my sticks that I chose to take with me on this race do wonders on the downhills! What feelings, what treat! I force myself not to descend too quickly and not put myself in the red and I want more. Frankly, I've never done so much pleasure over long distances downhill, especially since my sticks considerably dampen shocks usually felt by your knees! The runs are quite steep and winding as technical. My comrades of the effort they have more trouble on the way down but I pick up on the climb. It's a little game of cat and mouse!

The race continues, to the 80th km, I was told my seat around 75. Not bad! I do know that nothing is played all that I fear greatly the arrival of the night. At 5:54 p.m., 1:54 p.m. after the race, I arrive at the 100th km ... ravito

It is at this point 16km before the finish saving. I know that the most difficult tasks lie ahead. It's stupid to say, but when you are least tired and that is navigated in the dark, there are supposed to imagine a mechanism to protect the integrity of your body and which has the effect of being close eyelids to sleep better ...

What Calvary, Calvary What! There remain two huge mounted a huge raid and my little eyes that accept just to stay open. Then I move on autopilot, slowly ... slowly is better than nothing, but the more one is slower and the finish line recedes in time. At the 107th km, the third female is beyond me. I cling to his pace (frenzied ☺) for a good twenty minutes, before releasing it back ... At this point, I can not really over, riders double me, I double over. The end is near, of course, but so slowly.

Courage boy, bravo, it's almost over! I hear him say at the top of the last climb

- Thanks ... But I WANT TO SLEEP !!!!!!

I confess that I thought several times to stop half an hour / an hour to sleep along the way ... I did not, I wanted to happen and I was too afraid to catch cold or cramp my chopper

The final descent is broken jaws but particularly so synonymous with hope. In the valley, we hear the announcer announce arrivals. When my feet touch again tar, I know that the game is played. It must remain a little less than a kilometer, I accelerate, encouraged by the spectators. In the distance, I saw the finish line ... I finish a sprint for the form ... of course!!

It was 9:09 p.m. when I crossed the finish line, thus taking the 91st place overall and 29th in my class (senior). I am really pleased to be able to follow through. Thank you from my heart to everyone who supported me. I knew I would arrive at the end because I had the will, but nothing is ever played in advance and give the best of oneself at a given moment is not possible without incentive. In this regard, our first and last names were inscribed on the jersey, suddenly the spectators we could even make personalized encouragement. It's weird the first time when we forget what's written on his bib, but it is

A lil word on mileage anyway ... At the very beginning, more than 6 months before the race it must be a 120km. Just before the race we are told 116km. In the end we are told that there were only 112km. 112km compared to 116km, the error is acceptable and I will not take them too strictly to the organizers, we do not look at 63km with 72 announced on the actual Trail of Lords (even organizing team). The markup was impeccable as the PDS. Level course was very fast. Too big track (especially around the Aigoual) but a lot of technical descents, a real treat.

I do not come back next year, because, whatever the distance, I find it a bit pricey (I paid 100 Euros 4 months before the event). Anyway, I do not regret my participation. It's certainly something to live once in a lifetime runner

Basil, to serve you:)

PS: for those who want news about Steph, apparently the physio worked wonders . Sunday, he finally took the departure of the Knights Templar on 72km to accompany friends including Mary Servanne who was with him in Team UFO on the Raid EDHEC. Mary Servanne ended 72 km (that's right the final mileage?) In 10:37. Congratulations to her, and bravo to you Steph, still impressive

Yes, everything at the end! There is no point if we know how to run can not stop:)

Templar Trail - Endurance H-52 / 120km - 4250m D +

The end of the season for me to approach large not. Within 53 hours now, I will start my last tournament of the year. Not just any competition, because it is the mythical race of the Templars on the course of 120 km and endurance from 4000 to 4500 meters of elevation gain. On paper, a sensible race finishes in style my year of competition and training in beauty. To this day, including and excluding BMTU Off The Templars and workouts, I accounts for 50 +72 +45 +160 +80 +30 +28 = 465 km and 2000 Trail 1300 2500 9000 + 4800 1300 = 20900m of ascent ... without compatibilizing the Raid and Raid EDHEC Mercantour tabulating, in Raid Multisport 450km and about 18000 m of D + ...

On paper, therefore, for I must admit, I'm generally very tired. The job and the stress does not help, but I really think this year have had the experience of having done too much ... I regret nothing, I think we live this feeling to be able to reassess the practice of this sport exciting and full of discovery.

This may seem obvious to many, certainly to those who have an outside perspective to the world of raids and the Ultra, it is much less when one is inside. This sport really invite them to experience their limits and push them. When, after much work we begin to make long distance, everything looks as if there were no limits. Between a 80, a 120, 160, finally we are told there is not much difference in difficulty, it is just an effort management and training a little different!

I know now that I've done too much this year ... too much competition and not enough training. The next year, so I would reduce my number of likely participation. Less racing, but racing a little longer (which follows a logical given the distances achieved this year) and more drive and output short (around 1:30)

Anyway The end of the year is coming soon for me and the rest. I made this bitter fact, but at the same time I managed to make the program I had set myself earlier this year and for me it's still a source of pride.

I just returned from 12 days of vacation in New York during which I could really relax, empty the stress taf and motivate me for this last race of the year. I do not really shine, but I know I will finish this race, if only because the rest must be earned.

I'll go to sleep now, it's getting late. I do not know if I have time and inclination to take pictures but I'll tell you how it happened in all cases!

I will do my best

Humility, Respect, Serenity

Basil, to serve you, very tired but motivated:)

PS: A special dedication to UltraSteph which is the anniversary this Wednesday, October 20 and j 'have the pleasure to review from the race for Nant, Aveyron this Friday, September 23 at 4am
